At long last, Uber and Lyft are expanding their footprint across the entirety of New York 🗽. 🚗💨
While these ride-hailing rivals ⚔️ have been fixtures in New York City for years, they have now been granted the green light 🟢 to operate across the entire state. Following legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo ✍️ that officially went into effect on June 29 📅, Uber and Lyft are bringing their services to upstate New York, Long Island, Westchester, and virtually every corner of the state 🗺️.
Although drivers 👨✈️ have operated in various parts of the state before now, local ordinances had effectively banned 🚫 these platforms in several regions, including significant portions of Long Island. The new law ⚖️ authorizes ride-hailing statewide—establishing specific mandates regarding background checks and safety protocols 🛡️—while retaining a provision that allows local governments 🏛️ to opt out if they choose. Westchester weighed that possibility, but ultimately went ahead ✅ with the integration 🤝.
