While TSMC’s dominance in advanced chip manufacturing has provided industry stability , it has become a double-edged sword . When a single entity controls the majority of cutting-edge process nodes, chipmakers are left with fewer alternatives, a dynamic that inevitably drives up costs .
Compounding this issue, TSMC has signaled plans to increase foundry prices over the next three years, placing additional financial pressure on the companies that rely exclusively on its production lines .
Consequently, it is no surprise that major brands are scouting for alternatives , with Samsung emerging as a strong contender. The company has already secured significant contracts with Apple and Tesla , and fresh reports suggest AMD is poised to become its next major client .
AMD eyes Samsung’s 2nm fabrication
According to reports from South Korea , AMD is considering Samsung’s 2nm process for future silicon . The discussions appear serious, with Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong expected to meet personally with AMD CEO Lisa Su to negotiate the partnership.
This potential pivot isn’t entirely unexpected . Dr. Su has previously alluded to AMD’s desire for a diversified supply chain , though Samsung’s historical struggles with yield rates previously made them a risky partner for high-value orders.
However, the narrative seems to be shifting at the 2nm node . Samsung’s manufacturing process reportedly offers improved stability , with its initial 2nm silicon garnering positive feedback regarding both yield and performance capabilities .
Crucially, AMD is expected to adopt a calculated approach rather than jumping in at the ground floor. The company is reportedly bypassing the initial rollout to target Samsung’s second-generation 2nm node, designated as SF2P .
As the high-performance iteration of the process, SF2P brings tangible upgrades . Samsung claims this node delivers superior performance , drastically reduced power consumption , and a more compact chip footprint compared to its first 2nm offering.
Mass production for SF2P is slated for 2026 , with an enhanced SF2P+ version following in 2027 . If upcoming talks prove fruitful, AMD and Samsung could finalize a deal as early as next month . For Samsung, securing AMD would mark another high-profile win for its 2nm foundry business, following its success with Tesla .
