Google integrates Gemini AI into Search and Translate to master slang and idioms. Now available in the US and India across 20+ languages on web and mobile.

Google is bringing new Gemini-powered intelligence ✨ to Search 🔍 and the Translate app 🌐, specifically designed to handle the complexities of slang and idioms 💬. The company states that its AI 🤖 can now deliver more natural, accurate translations for phrases with “nuanced meanings.”  Instead of offering awkward literal translations, the system will now account for colloquial expressions and slang terms 🗣️.

This upgraded text translation feature is making its debut in the US 🇺🇸 and India 🇮🇳, supporting conversions between English and nearly 20 other languages 🌍, including German, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic. The update is available across the board on the web 💻, as well as the Translate app for both iOS and Android 📱.

Gemini’s speech-to-speech capabilities 🗣️ have also been overhauled to facilitate real-time translation through headphones 🎧, such as Apple’s AirPods Pro 3. Currently in beta 🧪 for Android users in the US (with an iOS release slated for next year), Google claims the feature attempts to “preserve the tone, emphasis and cadence of each speaker” 🎶. This helps users better follow the flow of conversation and distinguish between speakers. It is compatible with any headphones and supports over 70 languages 🗺️.

Furthermore, Google is bolstering the AI-powered language learning features 🎓 it added to Translate in August, further encroaching on Duolingo’s territory ⚔️. Similar to its competitor, Translate now tracks your daily streaks 🔥, allowing you to monitor your consistency and progress over time 📈. It remains unclear, however, if Google will be as famously persistent as the Duolingo owl 🦉 when you slack off.

The educational aspect gets another boost with improved feedback mechanisms 📝, providing more practical tips on pronunciation 🎤. Access to these tools is also expanding, with Germany 🇩🇪, India 🇮🇳, and Sweden 🇸🇪 among the 20 new countries receiving the update 🚀.

After a period of stagnation, Google has recently been aggressive in adding utility to Translate 🛠️. In addition to these language practice tools, an update last month introduced a toggle between “Fast” ⚡ and “Advanced” 🧠 translations. This allows users to prioritize speed for quick interactions (like ordering a drink at a bar 🍹) or leverage Gemini for higher accuracy when precision is required 🎯.
