Oppo and other Android brands are reportedly testing a 100MP square selfie camera sensor, mirroring Apple’s iPhone 17 "Center Stage" tech for better auto-framing.

When Apple rolled out the iPhone 17 series last year , one of its most intriguing hardware updates was the introduction of a square-shaped front camera sensor .

Dubbed Center Stage , this feature allows the lens to automatically frame subjects in both portrait and landscape modes—eliminating the need to physically rotate the device .

Now, it appears that major Android manufacturers are gearing up to adopt this exact same approach.

Oppo’s Next Flagship Could Feature a Square Selfie Lens

According to prominent leaker Digital Chat Station , a major smartphone brand is currently evaluating a massive 100MP 1:1 square front-facing camera sensor . While the tipster refrained from naming the company directly, the specific emoji used in the post strongly points toward Oppo .

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard whispers of Oppo developing square selfie technology. Earlier this year in February , the same insider reported that both Huawei and Oppo were closely monitoring 1:1 square sensors for integration into their future front-facing camera arrays .

The Benefits of a 100MP Square Selfie Camera

The primary advantage of a square selfie sensor lies in its sheer flexibility . Traditional front-facing cameras are typically optimized for vertical capture, forcing users to turn their phones horizontally to fit in wider group shots or landscape videos . A 1:1 square sensor bypasses this limitation by inherently capturing a much broader image area .

This hardware design also pairs seamlessly with modern AI capabilities . A square frame gives the software more room to handle automatic subject centering and dynamic field-of-view adjustments, significantly enhancing video calls , livestreams, and short-form content creation

While Apple’s entire iPhone 17 lineup utilizes a 24MP square sensor, Oppo’s decision to test a 100MP alternative could pave the way for vastly higher-resolution selfies and more detailed video capture .

At this stage, Oppo has yet to officially confirm the existence of this sensor or reveal which upcoming smartphone might be the first to feature it . We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information emerges .
