Samsung’s One UI 9 test build reveals animations for a mysterious new wide-screen foldable device alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Samsung has officially begun internal testing of One UI 9 for its upcoming generation of foldable devices.

At first glance, the roster appeared standard, featuring the expected Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. However, nestled among those familiar titles was a reference to Samsung’s long-rumored wide-screen foldable.

Now, that same One UI 9 test build has provided our first tangible clue regarding the mysterious device’s form factor.

Here is a glimpse of Samsung’s potential wide-screen foldable.

Animations buried within the software—originally spotted by Android Authority—depict a new foldable device in action. While the animations are rudimentary and devoid of specific hardware details, their presence is significant. This serves as the strongest evidence to date that Samsung is actively developing a broader Galaxy Z Fold-style handset.

Based on these visuals, the device appears distinctively wider than Samsung’s existing book-style offerings. It isn’t a comprehensive schematic; there are no visible camera modules, ports, or specific design accents. Nevertheless, even these basic outlines are enough to adjust our expectations.

The design suggests a foldable built around a more expansive inner display, likely aimed at enhancing multitasking and media consumption by moving away from extreme aspect ratios.

Currently, Huawei stands as the only major manufacturer openly embracing this wider form factor. The company demonstrated its commitment to tablet-like foldables with the launch of the Pura X last year.

Industry chatter is already circulating regarding a successor, the Pura X2, which is rumored to boast an even larger inner display potentially approaching seven inches.

If Samsung proceeds with this project, it could ignite a familiar rivalry, this time centered on the battle for wide-screen foldable dominance. However, it is prudent to keep expectations grounded.

The presence of a device within a software build is not a guarantee of a commercial launch. Over the years, Samsung has experimented with numerous concepts that never transitioned from the lab to retail shelves.
